About High Deductible Health Plans with a Health Savings Account
These plans are popular expense savings alternatives today. They feature a qualified high deductible health plan plus enrollment in a health savings account. Instead of paying a higher premium to the insurance company for lower deductible plans, individuals choose a high deductible plan and invest the premium savings into a health savings account. Deposits in the health savings account are tax deductible when you file your return. The health savings account allows you to make deposits up to federal limits, accumulate earnings on deposits income tax free, and make distributions from the savings account income tax free for qualified medical expenses. Distributions from your health savings account can be made for deductible and coinsurance reimbursements, dental, vision, chiropractic, and many other types of expenses that are not typically offered in the traditional medical insurance plan. Deposits to your health savings account are owned by you, not the insurance company.
Individuals and families who use the high deductible health plan plus the health savings account include:
Can the high deductible health plan be purchased without the savings account option? Yes, it can. You are certainly free to purchase only the high deductible health plan. Can I choose where my health savings account is established? Yes. You can use the bank offered by the insurance company or your own banking resource. It's up to you. Is the H.S.A. Plan Right for Me?
